Lecturer, Mining Department, specialising in surface mining, explosives, financial evaluation, mining contract and project management.  Much of the course design and lecturing carried out for the MSc Mining Engineering course.

Course Director - BEng Hons Mining Engineering, until semi-retirement in 1999.

Visiting Lecturer on Mining Finance to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Techniques Industrielles et des Mines d'Ales in the South of France.

Consulting Mining Engineer specialising in mineral evaluation, mine contracting, quarry and rock excavation and explosive useage. Carried out such diverse assignments as:

• A full review of the blasting operations at Wheal Martyn China Clay Quarry in Cornwall.

• Member of a team which carried out a Feasibility Study on the Amantaytau Gold project in Uzbekistan.

• Making blast design recommendations for the rock excavation needed for a sewerage treatment plant in the middle of St Ives, Cornwall.

• Reviewing the likely affect of the blasting operations at a planned surface mine, on the structure of the adjacent Megget Aquaduct in the Lothian Region of Scotland.

• Co-ordinating the preparation of a "competent person's" report on the Galmoy Zinc Mine Project in the Irish Republic.

Held the positions of both General and Technical Manager until the Group decided to withdraw from its UK coal based operations in May 1988.  During that time was responsible for all tendering, tender document reviews and the preparation of feasibility type studies for all minerals related opportunities.

May 82 - Jul 85  -  Iscor Ltd, Pretoria, South Africa
Open pit Mining Engineer in the Head Office based Mining Engineering and Consulting team where duties included: general opencast mine and quarry consulting with particular reference to drilling, blasting and mine restoration; working on feasibility studies for new surface mineral deposits within Southern Africa. This included all the planning work for a large limestone quarry near Pretoria and an open pit tin mine in Namibia.

Before transfer to Head Office was Mine Planning Engineer for two years at Sishen iron ore mine in Cape Province. During this time carried out medium and long term planning and evaluation operations for this deep open pit mine which had a total capacity of over 100Mt/year.

Technical Manager, providing a mining engineering back-up service to a very large construction and mining machinery sales company operating in Saudi Arabia.

Oct 77 - Mar 80  -  Ingersoll-Rand Co Ltd, London, UK
Sales Engineer covering drilling, quarrying and mining products in South Wales and the South West of England.

May 71 - Sep 77  -  Ritchies Equipment Ltd, Stirling, Scotland
Production engineering and management with a UK based rock excavation contractor working in the UK surface mining and quarrying industry. During this period was twice seconded to companies in the Middle East as a specialist rock excavation consultant.

Aug 67 - Apr 71 -  Demerara Bauxite Ltd, Guyana, South America
Mining Engineer, responsible for planning and production from various bauxite strip mining operations.
